welcome to
Scottish Independent Hostels -
quality assured hostels with character
SIH is the largest hostel network of its type in the world with over 100 hostels stretching from Scotland’s Highlands and Islands to our vibrant cities. Each one offers a warm welcome and something a little different from the norm. All SIH hostels are quality assured, though we like to think that it’s the unique and personal touches that will really make your stay a memorable one.
Choose from a cosy 6-bed hut in a pine forest, to modern city centre hostels, to converted railway carriages, lighthouses and crofters cottages. Individuals, families and groups are welcome at almost all hostels, except a few who cater exclusively for groups. Prices are low and if you’ve never stayed in an independent hostel you will be pleasantly surprised by what’s on offer besides the shared stories and a safe warm clean place to sleep: all SIH hostels have self-catering kitchens and some have features such as wood-burning stoves or a homemade breakfast in the morning.
Key features found in all our hostels:
- No membership required
- Relaxed and friendly atmosphere
- Well equiped self-catering kitchens
- Hot showers, warm clean beds
- Many hostels offer all day access and are open all year (check before you arrive)
- Quality Assured by VisitScotland
what's the difference between a bunkhouse and a hostel?
Bunkhouse
Rural accommodation which can be booked by groups or individuals. Services and facilities may be limited but will include a self-catering facility. Bunkhouses are not star rated but will meet or exceed minimum standards for cleanliness, maintenance and quality.
Hostel
Star rated accommodation often in shared rooms with bunk beds, family rooms may also be available. Hostels normally welcome individuals, families and groups, many of whom are staying on a short-term basis. Hostels often have a quite formalised structure, which may or may not include restricted access, meal service etc.
It should be noted that some properties with hostel-standard accommodation use the term 'bunkhouse' to describe themselves. If you're in any doubt, each individual hostel/bunkhouse will be pleased to clarify this for you.
