John's Bunkhouse

Outer Hebrides

John's Bunkhouse is located on the island of Berneray, mid-way between North Uist and Harris, at the heart of the Outer Hebrides. It is a small purpose - built hostel for eight, which opened in May 2018. The building combines the appeal of a traditional stone-built house, with the comfort and facilities of a modern bunkhouse. It stands above a tidal beach and is close to the causeway to North Uist, the ferry to Harris and the local shop and bistro. It is an ideal stopping off point for summer visitors and walkers and cyclists following the Hebridean Way.

The bunkhouse caters for individuals, groups and families and is a great place to meet people. The facilities include a well-equipped kitchen and a comfortable living-room area with expansive views out to the sea and North  Uist. There is also a drying-room. a bike shed with an outside tap and good disability access. There are three bedrooms. The two small bunkrooms each accommodate two people. The large double bunkroom sleeps four. This is a low energy building with underfloor heating and a peat burning stove. There are two shower rooms and a good parking area for cars.

Berneray is a great place to explore. Stepping outside the hostel you can enjoy a walk or paddle on the cockle beach and from there head across to the dunes and the  spectacular three mile long west beach. From the hill behind the hostel, with its ancient standing stone, there are panoramic views of North Uist and Harris, the islands of Pabbay and Boreray, and on a clear day, St Kilda in the distance. A walk around the whole island, following the coast, is entirely possible in one day and a memorable experience.

Berneray with its machair, tidal beaches and green hills provides a habitat for many species of flowers, birds and wildlife. Otters can occasionally be seen by the bunkhouse and further down the island seals are a common sight, backing on skerries and rocks.

From Berneray with its good ferry and bus connections, you can enjoy a day trip to Harris, to the bird sanctuary in Balranald, North Uist and to Lochmaddy with its art centre/museum, marina and hotels.
