The railway line is on one side of the hostel, the road on the other. Achnashellach is remote and quiet and open all the year round. Inside is warm and comfortable with accommodation for 20; two family rooms sleeping 5 in each (with a double and 3 singles), main dorm sleeping 10 in double bunks, also twin and double rooms available, with linen.

Gerry Howkins died in February 2015 Gerry established the first Independent Hostel in Scotland and was a founder member of SIH.  He was a true independent character and will be sadly missed.

Lovely location with a great view and a friendly host

The view from the hostel is as good as it gets. Hostel is located to few nice places like Torridon and Applecross. The host is very friendly and tries hard to make a stay comfortable. I highly recommend this place.

27 Years Later & Still Thinking Of Gerry's!

Reviewed on March 4, 2017

I spent Spring Break in 1990 wandering around Scotland. I was a young American art student studying in London & felt pulled North when I was free to get away. Edinburgh & Inverness both had their unique affect on me--but my short time at Gerry's burns the brightest in my mind even now. Nothing beats a clean, warm bed after spending the day on the trail. The stark landscape was truly lovely. The waving grasses, massive trees, waterfalls, lakes and streams were all still somewhat asleep at that time of the year and it was very cold--but there was something about being alone with the land that helped recharged my spirit. Thank you!

Fantastic hostel in great location where everything "is just part of the service"

Want to thank Simon for a great stay at the hostel. Its a great building with a warm fireplace that is regularly topped up. We arrived a day early and unexpected and within minutes we had a tea brewing in the pot which was welcome warmth after day 7 of the Cape Wrath Trail. We stayed for 2 nights and although the main bunk room is basic, it had everything you could need! The living space was big, stocked with loads of bits to keep you entertained. Kitchen had plenty of utensils and hobs for when its busy. And a very welcome and efficient drying room! Many thanks for a great stay - we will be back to finish the CWT next year and will stat with a night here!

accoglienza strepitosa (amazing hospitality)

Reviewed on August 29, 2016

The hostel is basic but extremely welcoming, the functional kitchen provided all we needed( I cooked for a group of nine people and I had no problem), a common room with fireplace and a cozy and warm atmosphere. Simon is a wonderful and extremely hospitable person who made us feel at home. I recommend it to everyone especially to groups of friends. Located in a beautiful valley.
