Dervaig Village Hall Hostel on the Island of Mull

Dervaig is located 7 miles from Tobermory in the north west corner of the Isle of Mull and is on a bus route between Tobermory and Calgary Bay famous for its sparkling sands and safe turquoise waters. The local bus connects with the bus service that runs from the ferry terminals to Tobermory. Dervaig is an attractive conservation village on the edge of sheltered sea loch with a pretty main street of white washed cottages. In the village can be found a well stocked shop/post office and the Bellachroy Hotel (the oldest inn on the island) a traditional village pub serving bar meals. Nearby is Kilmore Church (with one of only 2 pencil towers in Scotland) and within a short walk the Old Byre heritage centre and tea room. There are interesting walks along the loch and in the nearby forests whose paths and tracks walkers and cyclists can access without the fear of traffic found on the single track roads. These paths and tracks can take you to standing stones, a fossilised tree and the fairytale Glengorm castle. On any walk you will encounter wonderful views and wildlife including eagles, otters, and deer.

The hostel is located in the community hall which was built over 10 years ago and is an important focal point for the village and outlying areas. The wood lined main hall is used throughout the year by the local community for events including producers' markets, weddings, ceilidhs, meetings, and community activities such as badminton, lunch club and yoga. Hostel guests are welcome to join in the ceilidhs and some of the clubs and can use the hall and external sports area when they are not in use by the local community.

A PERFECT STAY

Reviewed on June 6, 2017

Five of us cycled around the Isle of Mull in early May where we stayed for one night at the hostel in Dervaig which is situated inside the local village hall. Upon arrival we contacted the friendly Imogen who promptly arrived to show us where the dormitory was and also all the excellent adjoining facilities. The dormitory we stayed in was impeccably clean and tidy with an excellent en-suite wetroom which is most unusual in a hostel. The bunk beds were the most comfortable we stayed in on the island. The hall is situated close to the village pub, which had excellent food, and the local well stocked shop. I would readily recommend this hostel as one of the best on the island.
