Hostelling is perfect for backpackers and independent travellers, but also ideal for anyone looking for good value accommodation including families, groups and exclusive use. The main attraction of Hostelling is the affordability, but also the camaraderie from sharing kitchens and living areas. Many Hostels are to be found in the most beautiful and remote parts of Scotland. However we also have Hostels in our major cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee which can even be suitable for longer stays. Many Hostels now offer family and ensuite rooms as well as the traditional dorms. SIH Hostels are all owned independently by people who are passionate about Scotland and very knowledgeable about the area in which they locate as well as being able to advise on how to get the best out of Scotland's cities and great outdoors.

Long Distance Trails
A great way to see Scotland is to walk or cycle some of the many long distance trails which are now available throughout the country. Long distance walks range from extreme mountain walks to pleasant seaside and valley strolls. Long distance routes provide multi-day, mainly off-road journeys through the Scottish countryside, similar to National Trails in other countries. It may take several days to complete the route, even longer for some of them. However, you can also enjoy them as a day trip, weekend adventure or short break. The major routes are the West Highland Way, Speyside Way, Great Glen Way and Southern Upland Way; click for a list of Scotlands long distance walking trails. Sustrans, Scotland's sustainable travel charity, promotes 9 long distance rides in Scotland, and the British Horse Society Scotland provides information about some horse-riding trails. And for those that prefer water to land, you can follow waterways such as the Great Glen.
