Scottish Independent Hostels (SIH) is the largest hostel network of its type in the world, with over 120 hostels stretching from Scotland’s Highlands and Islands to the vibrant cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dundee and Aberdeen.
What is a Hostel?
The description “Hostel” includes backpackers, bothies, bunkhouse, group accommodation and activity accommodation as well as actual hostels. Confusion can be caused by the fact that some VisitScotland star rated hostels have other designations in the brand name such as bunkhouse. However, it’s the VisitScotland star rating that matters in terms of type and standard of accommodation.
A not-for-profit organisation working on behalf of Independent Hostel Owners
SIH is managed by a board of directors on behalf of the Hostel member network. SIH is a not-for-profit company to support Independent Hostels Members and to promote hostelling throughout Scotland. The Board ensures the quality standards are being met, represents the hostels interests within Scotland and undertakes joint marketing. The SIH members’ website, the SIH Hostel Guide and the direct email newsletter are the main marketing tools. SIH also works closely with Independent Hostels UK in promoting the benefits of hostelling. Many SIH members are also members of SYHA but under SIH, guests do not pay a membership fee to book the hostel.
